Fortune Makaringe may be unlikely to feature for Orlando Pirates in Saturday’s big derby against, but the midfielder is pleased with the prospect of wearing the famous skull and crossbones on his chest.

The 25-year-old was brought over by the club from Maritzburg United, after being instrumental in helping the club avoid relegation, which looked rather imminent for a huge chunk of the 2018/19 season.

Joining the Soweto giants is undoubtedly a big step for the player, who was growing big in what was perhaps a small pond, and has been thrown into the deep end by donning the colours of one of the country’s biggest clubs.

For his signature, Orlando Pirates beat Chiefs as well as reigning PSL champs Mamelodi Sundowns, who were also after his services, and the player admits that the decision between the traditional “big three” of the local game was, by no means, an easy one.

“But as soon as Pirates called, I felt I had to respond because I knew the rich history this team holds. And for me to be chosen by Pirates meant a lot. I know that Orlando Pirates doesn’t just chose anyone – there are too many players out there that want to play for this club. So as soon as they come, you have to respond.”

Makaringe’s rise was capped by a national call-up, as he was part of the 30-man Bafana squad coach Stuart Baxter assembled in preparation for the Afcon 2019 tournament.

However, the squad was trimmed to 23, and the midfielder was one of the unfortunate few who did not make the final cut.

Although that would have been a confidence-sapping experience for some, Makaringe is optimistic about the future.

“I only grew from that. And one of the reasons I came to this club is because I will get to compete with the best and that will only improve my chances of playing for the national team,” Makaringe added.
