Key: Pirates need these TWO players

Orlando Pirates are one of the most frustrating teams to watch. Bucs dish out exciting build ups until they get in the final third.

Orlando Pirates fans have seen this movie so many times before. The Sea Robbers play well but keep wasting chances through over-playing or decision-making in the final third.

ORLANDO PIRATES WASTEFUL AGAINST CHIPPA UNITED

It’s such a common highlight at the Orlando Stadium: Bright and quick build-up play before one of the attackers loses the ball with a poor final pass. Most times there was never a need for the pass in the first place.

Anyways, if you need to find any reasons behind all the narrow scores: 1-0 over Swallows, shock 1-0 loss to Chippa, 1-1 with Stellenbosch and 1-0 with over Royal AM, the results are all due to the poor play described above.

TWO PLAYERS BUCS NEED

It is a hugely frustrating issue to see an entertaining side waste vast attacking spaces like this for so long. We have now figured out what the team needs to put the balls into the net.

Pirates do not necessarily need to work on clinical finishing at the training ground with the existing attacking players, rather, two types of players need to be recruited.

Jose Riveiro’s team, and many coaches before him for that matter, needed a particular type of number 8 and number 10. These players can either be in the team at the same time or earn selection at different times.

Looking at Pirates’ exiting number 8s such as Goodman Mosele and Fortune Makaringe, and the 10s like Thembinkosi Lorch and Kabelo Dlamini, all of these players just enjoy way too many passing and overplaying in the final phase.

The team needs fully direct players in the 8 and 10 positions. You know the player who picks up the ball to bomb for the goal with a shot or a run? Yes. This is what Bucs need.

Right now there are way too many ball-players who do not have enough goals in them or direct play to attack goalkeepers. If you look at Lorch, Dlamini, Mosele and Makaringe, they turn back or sideways way too much.

The last time Bucs had direct midfielders was with the likes of Isaac Chansa, Daine Klate (wide), Dove Wome (10), and Kermit Erasmus as a 10 instead of a nine.

Do Pirates have the direct number 8s or 10s in their reserve team? No is the answer. Should they look in the market? 100%. The deadline date is 22 September.

Meanwhile, Riveiro’s men have an away trip to face Royal AM on Wednesday at 19:30 at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
