Orlando Pirates are negotiating a contract extension with Tshegofatso Mabasa, including a huge buyout clause to reward his performances.

ORLANDO PIRATES WON’T SELL MABASA ON THE CHEAP

According to SoccerLaduma, the Orlando Pirates board are in advanced negotiations with Tshegofatso Mabasa to extend his stay with the club until June 2028. This is a reward for his stellar form in 2023/2024, where he scored 16 goals in the league to win the Golden Boot award. According to the publication’s sources, Pirates will trigger a two-year option, including a hefty R50 million buyout clause. That clause applies to local and foreign clubs, so if Mabasa is on their shopping list, they’ll have to cough up considerable cash, and it might price PSL clubs out of a potential deal.

“All parties involved are happy about the upcoming new deal. Yes, it’s an improved contract because the player has proved himself as the best striker in the league, warranting an enhanced deal,” the source added.

NEDBANK CUP FINAL LOOMS LARGE FOR PIRATES AND SUNDOWNS

Midfield orchestrator Miguel Timm is a major doubt for the Nedbank Cup final against Sundowns on 1 June after missing the 1-0 defeat to TS Galaxy. Key defender Tapelo Xoki will miss the game after being ruled out for the rest of the campaign. The 29-year-old central defender made 26 appearances in the league and three in the Nedbank Cup. He’s also grabbed three goals in that competition. Xoki suffered a serious ankle injury in training and needs surgery. Deon Hotto returned for the final league matches of the campaign, however, after getting injured in the Nedbank Cup semi-finals against Chippa.

Sundowns and Pirates lock horns on Saturday, 1 June from 15:00 at Mbombela Stadium.

DOES SALENG NEED A NEW CHALLENGE?

Tanzanian midfielder Majogoro, who made 16 league appearances this term, and Saleng are reportedly keen to take their respective careers in different directions. For all his struggles with form this season, Saleng still chipped in with three goals and two assists in 17 league clashes, including a match-winning brace against Kaizer Chiefs. He’s been a shadow of his 2022/2023 self when he scored 15 goals and supplied 11 assists from 30 matches across all competitions. But as they say, form is temporary, and class is permanent.

“If Chippa agree to Saleng then it will benefit both parties as Saleng was not happy this season as he didn’t play as much as he would have loved. He wanted to build on and continue the form from the other season but things didn’t work out for him and now he wants to get more game time once again and the exchange deal with Baraka (Majogoro) would be good for Saleng as well,” said the source.
