Gallants took the lead through Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo from the penalty spot but Bandile Shandu equalised for Pirates midway through the first half.

Pirates had a chance to break the deadlock 10 minutes into the game following a good combination by Deon Hotto and Zakhele Lepasa but the latter failed to hit the target.

Gallants made a few entries into the Pirates box, and in the 20th minute, Happy Jele brought Joseph Malongoane down inside the penalty box.

The referee pointed to the spot, and Ndlondlo stepped up to hand Marumo Gallants the lead.

The excitement was cut short though, as Pirates continued to push forward until they were rewarded through Shandu who connected with Lepasa’s pass to beat King Ndlovu 10 minutes later.

Pirates had a good start to the second half, and three minutes into it, Hotto rattled the woodwork from an out-of-the-box free-kick.

However, that was all Pirates could do because even Thembinkosi Lorch and Kwame Peprah hardly gave them anything after coming on as second half substitutes.

Both teams couldn’t find the winner after 90 minutes of football, and the match had to go to extra time.

However, nothing changed as neither side could score, and thus, sending the encounter into penalties.

Pirates had the advantage to win the match after Malongoane had missed his penalty but Olisa Ndah blew that chance up as he skied his penalty.

Marumo Gallants had the chance to capitalise in the sudden death after Linda Mntambo also ballooned his penalty over the crossbar but Miguel Timm was denied by Richard Ofori.

Terrence Dzukamanja was then denied by King Ndlovu before the Marumo Gallants goalkeeper took one himself to send his team into the quarter-finals.
