“Some of the signings we have are not yet ready to play for Pirates. Again, there is a lot of chopping and changing in the starting line up. You sign eight players and you want to play seven at the same time? It can’t be! I always share my experience with the team” said Lekgwathi to Sun Sport

Lekgwathi who served as Pirates captain for a number of seasons was also on hand to speak about his team in the black and white jersey and how things were done when the club garnered a lot of success.

Lekgwathi speaks on his days

“I remember when we (Pirates) won the first treble in the 2010-11 season, the chairman Irvin Khoza didn’t relax, he signed top player”.  Said Legkwathi

The players Lekgwathi is referring to are Thandani Ntshumayelo, Siyabonga Sangweni, Benni McCarthy, Tokelo Rantie and Thabo Matlaba, who were all already, or would be Bafana Bafana internationals. They all joined Pirates and helped the club claim back-to-back trebles.

“But they played gradually, Benni and Sangweni deserved to play from the onset, with Benni having played overseas. Thabo, Ntshumayelo were introduced gradually. Right now, boom, all at once. You kill players and the momentum of the team” continued Lekgwathi.

Lekgwathi then makes a comparison between Sundowns and Pirates.

Comparison with Sundowns

“Look at Sundowns, Kermit Erasmus when he came, he didn’t play from the start. It was the same with Thabiso Kutumela, Mothobi Mvala, Andile Jali and Mosa Lebusa. At Pirates we rush players” Lekgwathi concluded.

Lekgwathi spent 14 years at Pirates, winning 14 major trophies.
