Former Orlando Pirates striker Jerry Sikhosana has been left shaking his head by Gabadinho Mhango’s stint at the club.

Mhango shared the Lesley Manyathela Golden Boot award with Peter Shalulile but has been relegated to a bit part role in the last two seasons.

At the recent Africa Cup of Nations Mhango was a revelation, scoring a wonder-goal for Malawi and igniting hopes that he might revive his Orlando Pirates career.

However, it now seems likely that Mhango will leave Orlando Pirates without making a significant impact.

Sikhosana saw Mhango play before he joined Pirates and was among those urging the club to sign the Malawian after a standout run in the 2019 Cosafa Cup.

To look at him play, there is every suggestion that Mhango is somebody who could play in Europe and the top leagues of the world but his time at Pirates has not elevated his status.

Sikhosana insists the entire saga is a great shame, telling Soccer Laduma: “At Cosafa Cup, was the first time I saw Gabadinho Mhango for Malawi in KwaMashu at Princess Magogo Stadium during this tournament, scoring a beautiful goal and he was the top goalscorer.

“I told him that I wish I can negotiate with him to play for Orlando Pirates, that happens but I was so disappointed that he didn’t live up to expectations that i had.

“Whatever happened to him at Pirates, it was just football politics and misconduct, I wish I knew how to assist him, for me he was an asset and even in the Afcon in Cameroon, he was good but maybe he wasn’t okay for him at Pirates, regardless of that I stil see him as one of the best strikers in Africa.”
