Orlando Pirates defender Kwanda Mngonyama has reflected on his debut since joining the club on a free transfer during the off-season.

Orlando Pirates defender Kwanda Mngonyama has reflected on his debut since joining the club on a free transfer during the off-season.

Mngonyama produced a man of the match performance in Pirates’ 0-0 draw away to Diables Noirs of Brazzaville on Friday.

And the former South Africa youth international said he was well prepared for the encounter after patiently waiting for his chance to feature for Pirates.

“I was prepared for the game, and I have been waiting for this chance,” Mngonyama told the Pirates media team.

“Obviously, the squad is huge. So, each and every chance that you get, you have to perform and deliver for the club. We knew very well that it’s not going to be an easy one,” he said.

Mngonyama said playing a continental game away from home is always tough but he’s happy he could use the experience he gained with SA junior teams to help Pirates get a draw.

“Obviously, we were playing an away game, and in Africa it’s always tough. I’ve been there with the U20 and U23 national teams,” added Mngonyama.

“So, for me, it’s not like a new thing and I knew exactly what to expect,” he concluded.

Pirates will shift their focus to Mngonyama’s former club Maritzburg United on Wednesday before hosting Diables Noirs on 24 October.
