Orlando Pirates ‘keeper crisis not keeping Fadlu Davids awake at night

Orlando Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids is backing young goalkeeper Kopano Thuntsane to step up in helping the team with its ‘keeper crisis’.

Orlando Pirates co-coach Fadlu Davids is backing young goalkeeper Kopano Thuntsane to step up and show his worth in helping the team out with its current ‘keeper crisis’.

First-choice goalkeeper Richard Ofori is out injured and now third-choice Wayne Sandilands is also sidelined.

Over the last few weeks the Buccaneers have depended on veteran shot-stopper Siyabong Mpontshane in goal.

The Soweto giants have now promoted 22-year-old Thuntsane to the first team from their MultiChoice Diski Challenge side. He has been among the substitutes in the last two matches.

In an interview with Kickoff, Davids said he believes Thuntsane is ready to play for the first team.

“We have a set of youngsters who are playing in the MDC because they are still young enough, it’s Bophela, Radiopane, Monyane, Tunsane, Ayanda Sithole, the other goalkeeper as well so were alternating in that regard.

“Of course, the injury with Richard Ofori and the injury with Wayne Sandilands at the moment, Kopana has been doing very well in the MDC and his now deputising for Mpontshane, who is our only senior goalkeeper available,” said Davids.

“But we are not afraid. His performances have been good. The goalkeeping coaches have been working excellently with these younger ones. Also players from the MDC, more goalkeepers, more players coming from the MDC to train with the first team.

“So, it’s steps, and we’re not afraid that if that opportunity comes, he’ll be able to take it and do well.”

Orlando Pirates are seventh in the latest DStv Premiership standings with 11 points, already a yawning eight points behind log-leaders Mamelodi Sundowns who have played one fewer match.

Their five draws to date are the most Orlando Pirates have recorded at a similar stage of any PSL season to date.
