Orlando Pirates striker Mhango makes history with Malawi at AFCON

Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mhango made history with his national team of Malawi at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Friday.

Orlando Pirates striker Gabadinho Mhango made history with his national team of Malawi at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) on Friday.

Malawi were playing Zimbabwe in the two teams’ second match of Group B, and Mhango netted twice to help his team win 2-1 on the night.

In doing so, Mhango became the first player in the history of Malawi to score a brace at AFCON finals.

Mhango’s two goals were enough to eliminate the Warriors of Zimbabwe who are winless in their first two matches of the tournament.

Zimbabwe still have to play Guinea in their final match of Group B, but they will just be honouring the fixture as they have no chance of finishing either first or second.

MHANGO’S RESURGENCE TO BENEFIT ORLANDO PIRATES

After struggling in front of goal for months this season, Mhango’s resurgence could exactly be what Orlando Pirates need in the second half of the campaign.

Mhango fell out of favour with the Pirates technical team, and his off-field behaviour didn’t do him a world of good.

With just six appearances and no goals to his name, Friday’s brace against Zimbabwe could go a long way in benefitting Mhango and Pirates.

Mhango’s goalscoring prowess cannot be questioned and it appears a change of environment, in this case the AFCON, may help him refocus and rediscover his old form.
