Mbatha had been around the reserve football circles for quite some time, having featured for Highlands Park. After the club sold its status, the player sought a move to stay in the top-flight ranks and joined SuperSport. There, he eventually made it to the first-team squad under coach Gavin Hunt. Even so, he failed to be a regular in the side, even struggling to make the match day squad. Therefore, it came as a shock to many when Pirates announced the signing of the 22-year-old.

SuperSport agree terms with Pirates for Mbatha

This publication reported in March that SuperSport and Pirates had agreed to a loan deal with an option to buy. Now with just a couple of games into his Buccaneers career, it is thought a decision has already been made. According to Mbatha’s agent Mike Makaab the player is most likely to stay at his current club.

Now according to Soccer-Laduma Pirates and SuperSport have finally agreed on a deal for Mbatha’s long-term future.

Deal announced after Nedbank Cup final?

“The Siya crew understands Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United will finalise a permanent move for midfielder Thalente Mbatha after the Nedbank Cup final, with a three-year deal expected to be completed. Mbatha signed a loan deal in the January transfer window, with Pirates having an option to make the deal permanent. As things stand, Pirates are preparing to make the deal permanent and the Siya crew has been informed that all the figures have been pre-agreed, so the two clubs will not be opening fresh negotiations.” Wrote the publication.

It has been an open secret that Mbatha will stay at Pirates. With noise coming from both Makaab and SuperSport making it seem like a case of when and not if.
