Orlando Pirates defensive midfielder-cum-fullback Abel Mabaso is prepared to move on if the club finds him surplus to requirements.

Mabaso still has two-years left on his contract with Orlando Pirates and hopes to secure a long stay at the Soweto Giants according to an anonymous source close to the player.

Orlando Pirates’ Mabaso unsure what the future holds

“Anything is possible during this time of the season, it doesn’t matter if you have one or two years left on your contract. If the club no longer requires your services you end up being on the transfer list or being loaned out. He knows that and I think having not played a lot of games at the club is the reason he thinks he might be one of the players to be transferred,” the source told Phakaaati.

“I really don’t know how his contract looks, the way he is going on, it looks like it it’s coming to an end. But what I like about him is that, even though he seems like he doesn’t know where he stands, he is still confident about his future.”

A season hampered by injury

Mabaso’s 2020/21 campaign was hampered by injury and he would make just 15 appearances across all competitions.

He was given a holding role in Pirates Caf Confederation Cup Quarter-final second leg and was whipped off at half-time after Raja put four past the Buccaneers in the first 45.

Mabaso finished the PSL season serving a suspension, an occupational hazard for a player in his role, but something he could have done without in his bid to nail down a place in the team.

The 30-year-old could very well end up being loaned out if he can’t convince the coach that he can be an asset in a push for the Premiership title.

Mabaso does not currently feature in the Orlando Pirates squad for the Carling Black Label Cup according to the latest voting. The traditional pre-season derby match with an interactive twist is scheduled to take place on 1 August 2021 at Orlando Stadium.
