OPINION: The Black Label Cup isn’t a major trophy

The Carling Black Label Cup is a wonderful way to engage the fans, but does it qualify as a major trophy in your eyes?

The Carling lack Label Cup is a mid-season friendly tournament to be staged this weekend.

Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns and AmaZulu will all be eager to lift the cup, but does it qualify as a major trophy or are they just in it for the cash and bragging rights?

The Black Label Cup isn’t a major trophy

Obviously, every side participating in the Black Label Cup wants to win it. These are highly competitive individuals for whom winning is a daily quest. However, I’d argue that the tournament, which is officially deemed as a mid-season friendly anyway, is nothing more.

The best thing about it, however, is that engages and involves fans, and we all know that football would be nothing without the fans. I just wonder how the players view it; they want the bragging rights in PSL circles, but would they brag about winning it to their grandkids one day?
