OPEN letter to Percy Tau: Time to return to SA, but not Kaizer Chiefs

Where will Percy Muzi Tau be playing his football next season?

Percy Tau will have plenty of suitors should he move back to South Africa. Kaizer Chiefs will be interested but has better options.

There’s too much uncertainty at Kaizer Chiefs

Next season, Amakhosi don’t even have MTN8 football in the bag and you wouldn’t fancy their chances of going deep in the Nedbank Cup. They’re also unlikely to mount any type of credible challenge after finishing tenth, some 37 points behind champions Sundowns.

Perhaps a move to Orlando Pirates is on the cards?

Pirates can offer CAF Champions League football, and their recent record in cup competitions will be alluring too. They’ve won back-to-back MTN8 crowns and will be crying for a three-peat in 2024/2025. They’re also just a game away from defending the Nedbank Cup.

Jingles describes Tau as a self-driven, dedicated footballer who doesn’t need micromanaging. “He’s that student who you say give me this assignment in five days and then after two says he’s done,” he said. “He respects the game.”

With notable giants like Sundowns, Brighton, Club Brugge, Anderlecht and Al Ahly on his CV, among others, Percy Tau has the pedigree and experience to pick and choose. Will he select the right option? His career is at a crossroads as his Al Ahly future hangs in the balance. In the unlikely event that Chiefs somehow lure Pitso over to Naturena, that could throw a rat amongst the pigeons.

Jingles has problems of his own

Pitso Mosimane’s mandate was to keep Abha in the top flight when he took over in January. If they get relegated, that’ll undoubtedly be a huge stain on his otherwise stellar managerial career. Abha claimed a critical 2-1 win against Al Khaleej in their last match, and their final fixture is against rock-bottom Al-Hazm. A win there would guarantee safety for Mosimane and his team.

Musona vs Pitso in a relegation battle?

What about Knowledge Musona and Al-Riyadh? They’re not out of the woods after a disappointing 2-2 draw with 10-man Al Nassr. They’re only above Abha on goal difference and could be reeled in by 16th-placed Al Tai, Musona’s old team. Al-Riyadh is away to Al Khaleej and Al-Tai faces 18th-placed Al Akhdoud on the final day. All matches kick off at 20:00 (SA time) on Monday 27 May. If Abha and Al-Tai win their matches and Al-Riyadh fails to do the same, they and Musona will be relegated. It’s going down to the wire.
