OPEN LETTER to Benni McCarthy: Avoid Kaizer Chiefs like a biblical plague

What are your thoughts?

Kaizer Chiefs are looking for a new manager. Although Benni McCarthy might be on their shortlist, he should avoid the Glamour Boys at all costs.

Benni McCarthy is still basking in FA Cup success

The Bafana Bafana legend has been part of silverware-laden seasons for two years running. The Red Devils, for all of their struggles, lifted the EFL Cup last season and bagged the FA Cup on Saturday by beating Man City. It wasn’t quite a tactical masterclass from Erik Ten Hag but it was close. Stories of Ten Hag’s imminent exit from the club dominated social in the buildup to Saturday’s final and if it was his last game in charge, the former Ajax boss produced one of his best tactical displays in one of his biggest matches. Teenagers Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho scored the goals for a counter-attacking United side while Jeremy Doku grabbed what only proved to be a late consolation for City. It was United’s 13th FA Cup win, they’re now just one win behind all-time leaders Arsenal.

Chiefs job would be lucrative, but at what cost?

Sure, Kaizer Chiefs can probably offer Benni McCarthy a massive salary but would it be worth all the pressure, instability and scrutiny? Besides, Pitso Mosimane is the more senior candidate and is likely the man Amakhosi’s board want the most. Benni shouldn’t settle for being the second or third choice and rather take up a head coach role where he’s THE prime candidate. Next season, Amakhosi don’t even have MTN8 football in the bag and you wouldn’t fancy their chances of going deep in the Nedbank Cup. They’re also unlikely to mount any credible challenge after finishing tenth, some 37 points behind champions Sundowns.

Pitso Mosimane and Sead Ramovic are otherwise engaged

Meanwhile, two prime candidates for the role have much more important fish to fry right now. TS Galaxy boss Sead Ramovic called Chiefs ‘the most beautiful club in South Africa’ but reaffirmed his commitment to The Rockets. The legendary Pitso Mosimane is one win away from securing top-flight status for Abha in the Saudi Pro League next season. Can he do it?
