Mamelodi Sundowns will look to avoid coming at the end of what could be the biggest upset in the current edition of the Nedbank Cup when they take on Vaal University of Technology (VUT) on Sunday.

The second-round match – the first-ever encounter between these two sides – takes place at the Tshwane Giants’ fortress Lucas Moripe Stadium, where they have slayed even Africa’s best in recent years.

Minnows look to repeat their giant-killing feat

They come up against a side plying its trade in the third-tier of South African soccer, the ABC Motsepe League.

VUT have, however, proven not to be underestimated, having beaten top-division outfit Golden Arrows in the Round of 32.

The minnows held Abafana Besthende to a goalless draw before prevailing via a penalty shootout which went to sudden death.

Their next opponents have a good record of putting away lower league sides, most-famously one Powerlines FC from Kimberley.

Sundowns hold the record for the most goals scored in a single match in the Nedbank Cup after putting no less than 24 past Powerlines with no response back in 2012.

Should everything go according to coach Pitso Mosimane’s wishes, we could see another flurry of goals in Atteridgeville.

“We respect our opponents. I am happy to be part of the team that made history in the Nedbank Cup tournament with Powerlines,” said Mosimane.

“I am happy that I am employed by a team that made the Caf record 16-1 [aggregate win over Seychelles champions Cote d’Or in the Caf Champions League]. “You can’t disrespect your opponents. What I can guarantee you if even if it can be 3-0 or 4-0 we won’t be showboating. I like goals more than tricks. I want to see goals.”
