Nedbank Cup draw: THREE non-DStv Premiership sides WILL make the quarter-finals!

The Nedbank Cup Last 16 draw was conducted at the MultiChoice headquarters in Randburg on Monday with threw up some mouth-watering fixtures.

As reported by The South African website, there are just eight DStv Premiership teams left in the competition after a number of upsets in the Round of 32 – the biggest of which was the shock defeat (or was it expected?) of Kaizer Chiefs.

Amakhosi were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup Last 32 for the second season running when they went down 1-0 to TS Galaxy on Saturday.

The four KwaZulu-Natal teams campaigning in the DStv Premiership are down to just ONE, Royal AM, after AmaZulu, Maritzburg United and Golden Arrows all lost.

The draw threw up three all-DStv Premiership matches, meaning at least three non-DStv Premiership teams will contest the quarter-finals – and earn themselves R400 000 at the very least.

The three all-DStv Premiership matches are: Swallows FC v Royal AM, TS Galaxy v Baroka FC and Marumo Gallants v Orlando Pirates.

The three matches that don’t involve any DStv Premiership side are: Venda Football Academy v University of Pretoria, Sinenkani FC v Tshakhuma FC and Summerfield Dynamos v Black Eagles.

Lastly, the other two matches which involve one DStv Premiership side and one side from a lower tier in Mzansi are: Platinum City Rovers v SuperSport United and Mamelodi Sundowns v Mathaithai FC

The league will release the dates, kick-off times, venues and all other logistics regarding the Nedbank Cup Last 16 fixtures in due course.

This season’s winner will pocket a cool R7 million and also receive a spot in next season’s CAF Confederation Cup competition.

The Nedbank Cup remains the second biggest cup competition in South Africa after the MTN8 which offers R8 million to its winner.

Marumo Gallants are the reigning champions and they remain on track to successfully defend their title.
