MTN8: These SIX teams are officially IN next season’s tournament!

Six teams have booked their places in next season’s MTN8 tournament with just one round of league matches remaining.

Six teams have booked their places in next season’s MTN8 tournament with just one round of league matches remaining.

The penultimate round of DStv Premiership fixtures in the 2021/22 season was played on Saturday, 14 May and saw some shock results.

In total seven matches took place with only Orlando Pirates (due to their CAF Confederation Cup commitments) and Maritzburg United (who had no one to play) not in action.

Champions Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a shock – and heavy – 3-0 defeat at home to Stellenbosch FC, while Cape Town City FC and Royal AM, who are both chasing a CAF Champions League spot, were held to draws.

Kaizer Chiefs did their chances a world of good with a narrow 1-0 away win over Sekhukhune United.

In terms of the top eight finishers who will automatically book their places in next season’s MTN8, six now cannot be overtaken – while three teams remain in contention for the final two berths.

The teams who have officially qualified are defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns, Cape Town City FC, Royal AM, Kaizer Chiefs, Stellenbosch FC and AmaZulu.

The remaining two spots will be filled by two of Orlando Pirates, SuperSport United and Golden Arrows.

That will be decided around 17:00 next Saturday – or whenever the Buccaneers finally complete their outstanding matches due to their CAF Confederation Cup commitments.
