MTN8 match report | Golden Arrows too sharp for SuperSport United – 14 August

Golden Arrows booked their place in the semi-finals of the MTN8 with a 4-3 penalty shoot out win over SuperSport United on Saturday.

Golden Arrows booked their place in the semi-finals of the MTN8 with a 4-3 penalty shoot out win over SuperSport United on Saturday.

SuperSport United were without coach Kaitano Tembo who was serving his two-match suspension, and in his absence, Andre Arendse led the technical team.

The match also marked Lehlohonolo Seema’s first as head coach Golden Arrows, and his charges didn’t disappoint on the day.

Both sides had a go at each other from the first whistle, and created a number of good goalscoring chances.

However, neither side could find the back of the net in the first half, and that’s because both Sifiso Mlungwana and Ronwen Williams pulled off some great saves.

The second half saw Arrows take the lead through Knox Mutizwa who converted from the penalty spot after a foul by Teboho Mokoena inside the SuperSport box.

With Arrows 12 minutes away from winning the game, Gampani Lungu leveled matters with a sublime finish in the 78th minute.

The game would then need extra time to see if there would be a winner on the night as neither team could find the winning goal in regulation time.

The first half of extra time saw SuperSport United take the lead for the first time in the encounter with substitute Iqraam Rayners blasting his effort past Mlungwana to make it 2-1.

With SuperSport United certain for a spot in the semi-finals, Michael Gumede struck a late equalizer to make 2-2 and send the game straight to penalties.

SuperSport United missed two of their five penalties as Arrows walked away 4-3 winners to seal their place in the semi-finals.
