Former Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Teko Modise has recalled how Pitso Mosimane was instrumental in him joining SuperSport United in 2006.

However, Modise disputed Mosimane’s comments that he actually went to FETCH him from City Pillars, before explaining his side of the story and how he got to know the now-Al Ahly mentor.

“He lied,” said Modise in response to whether or not Mosimane literally fetched him at City Pillars.

At the time (in 2002), Ria Stars had just been sold and the late Thomas Madigage had just retired from professional football, and Mosimane wanted Modise to replace the talented former midfielder at Matsatsantsa.

“And let me tell you why… when Ria Stars was sold and when Thomas Madigage retired, coach Pitso used to fetch me from South Gate every day in the morning to go to training… every single day because he wanted to me to replace Thomas Madigage [at SuperSport],” he explained.

Modise said he could have actually joined SuperSport United earlier than 2006 but he wasn’t confident enough given the talent that was there at the Tshwane-based outfit at the time.

“Before I even signed for City Pillars, I was supposed to sign for SuperSport but if you look at the talent that was there, I was like, ‘I don’t want to be in the same position as I was at Ria Stars,” continued Modise.

He would then stop going to training without telling Mosimane.

“So, I stopped going to training without telling him. I think he was pissed at me for the longest time, and when that opportunity came back again to play for SuperSport… whereas I could have played for any team after winning Footballer of Year in [the] Mvela [League],” recalled Modise.

Modise eventually signed for SuperSport United in 2006, four years after Mosimane spotted him at Ria Stars, and he explained why he chose Matsatsantsa.

“But I chose SuperSport because of the friendship that I also built with Pitso at the time, and bear in mind, SuperSport was the last team I actually spoke to,” he revealed.

“I spoke to every team at the time and I was just waiting for SuperSport, and that’s how I went to SuperSport because of what Pitso saw in me four years before everybody else could actually see in me,” added Modise.

Modise and Mosimane would again work together at Sundowns, and the pair won the CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup among other major trophies before the Meadowlands-born star moved to Cape Town City to finish his playing career.
