It has been a big month for Marks “Go Man Go” Maponyane as the popular and much-loved Kaizer Chiefs icon turned 60.

To mark the milestone and to pay tribute to the sharpshooter, a look at six Maponyane facts that offer insight into his illustrious Amakhosi career.

1. Marks Maponyane made his Glamour Boys debut on 12 April 1981 against Leicester City at Eldorado Park, scoring on debut in a 2-1 win.

2. He was named as the 1983 Footballer of the Year, a year in which Kaizer Chiefs won the Datsun Challenge.

3. Maponyane was on fire in the 1985/86 season, netting 21 times, including seven in cup games.

4. He was again crowned as the Footballer of the Year in 1987 after a prolific season, in which he scored 26 goals – 13 in the league and 13 in cup matches.

5. The star striker became the first player to score a hat-trick in a cup final, the BP Top 8, netting all three goals against Grinaker Rangers in a 3-0 first leg win, with Kaizer Chiefs going on to win the final on aggregate 5-1 that year.

6. Amazingly, Maponyane netted five times in cup finals in 1987, and became Kaizer Chiefs’ ‘go-to-man’ for the big occasion.

7. He made 192 appearances for Kaizer Chiefs and also represented their bitter Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates on 136 occasions and Bidvest Wits 74 times

8. He has been married since 1985 and has two sons, Katlego and Masego or “Maps” who was voted GQ Best Dressed Man 2011 and Cosmopolitan Sexiest Man 2013.

9. Maponyane played 13 matches for Bafana Bafana between 1992-1995, scoring two goals.

10. These days Maponyane is a well-known motivational speaker, football analyst and if prolific on Twitter!
