It’s crunch time in the PSL, and one of the fixtures bound to drew a few eyeballs involves hosts Maritzburg United, who welcome Orlando Pirates to Lucas Moripe Stadium on Wednesday night at 18:00.

Only six more points are possible for both sides in the current season, and a maximum haul for either side would almost certainly secure a spot in Caf competition.

Team news

For two of the coaches involved in this particular fixture, it’s an opportunitity to put one over a side where they first got a taste of the hot seat.

Maritzburg United mentor Eric Tinkler served as assistant to former Bafana goalkeeper Roger de Sa at the Soweto giants before stepping up as head coach at one of South Africa’s most reverred clubs.

The ex-Barnsley midfielder is determined to guide the Team of Choice to what he feels would be an upset against Orlando Pirates.

“Having ensured we finished in the top eight, it’s been a long and tough season and we would like to finish strong. Everybody is raring to go and hopefully we can cause an upset against Orlando Pirates.”

Pirates assistant coach Fadlu Davids trekked the opposite direction after a couple of seasons at Maritzburg United, having also represented the Bucs as a player..

He returned to his former club as assistant to former mentor, Milutin Sredojevic, and is expecting an organised effort from Tinkler’s charges.

“We face a Maritzburg United team – really organised team, not a team that builds up too much,” he told the Orlando Pirates website. “They do build up but extremely slow.
