Maritzburg United seek to extend their 18-match home Friday night unbeaten run at the Harry Gwala Stadium, but AmaZulu will hope to have something to say about that.

The Team of Choice won another KwaZulu-Natal derby against Golden Arrows 2-1 in the opening game of 2020, extending their unbeaten streak in Friday matches. They followed that up with draws against SuperSport United and Chippa United.

“I think we commanded the game, very well, probably from the first whistle,” Tinkler was quoted as saying by Maritzburg’s website after the 0-0 draw with the Chilli Boys in Mdantsane.

“Yes, Chippa had a lot of possession in the first 20 minute period, but it was negative possession in their own half and they couldn’t hurt us. Only once or twice they played the long ball over the top, but I thought we dealt with that very well.”

The Team of Choice are in pole position to clinch a spot in next season’s MTN8. AmaZulu, by contrast, languish in 14th on the table.

The usually unflappable Neil Boshoff was not at his best in Usuthu’s 2-0 defeat to SuperSport United over the weekend, while the team from Durban also struggled to bury their chances.

An over-reliance on Bongi Ntuli for goals has been a problem, but they will hope the addition of Milos Lacny to their squad will change that.

History does not bode well for AmaZulu — they have not beaten Maritzburg in any of their last seven encounters. Usuthu’s last triumph over the Team of Choice was a 3-1 away win in 2014.

Kick-off time and prediction

Kick-off time: 17 January, 20:00

Prediction: Both teams have plenty of talented defensive players and quality goalkeepers and not many goals are likely. Maritzburg’s home Friday night run speaks for itself, so they are backed to win 1-0.

When crunching the numbers and with an expected chance of winning of 56% and considering they win more of half their games with these odds, Maritzburg United are favourites. AmaZulu have just a 25% chance of winning and only win 16% of their matches with these odds.
