Before he left, Lakay had already lost his first team spot to Aubrey Modiba who has been in fine form since the current season began.

Speaking in an interview with SA FM earlier this week, Lakay said the move caught him off guard as he wanted to stay and fight for his place at the club.

Mngqithi says they wanted the 31-year-old to get a regular game time and City were perfect for him since they are competing in the CAF Champions League this season.

‘WE HAVE A NICE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE BOY’ – MNGQITHI ON LAKAY

“He is still our player by the way, just for your information,” Mngqithi said as per Soccer Laduma.

“We released him because we wanted him to get more game time, because we are looking at our squad and if you have a player of Lyle’s age and his game is already affected if you look at how we have started the season.

“But he has served the club and we are very proud of what he has done for us.

“We are in full support of him pursuing his endeavours to go to Cape Town City because that is also good for the player to get game time in that space where Cape Town City is going to be competing in the Champions League.

“But we’ve got an amicable and nice relationship with the boy. I would not want to spoil that by talking things that I know for a fact are not true.”
