Mamelodi Sundowns suffered a key injury blow when star striker Peter Shalulile missed their DStv Premiership defeat to Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday, 25 April.

The Brazilians tasted defeat for the first time this season when they suffered a 2-1 loss to Amakhosi at Loftus Versfeld.

Mamelodi Sundowns were without their top goalscorer Peter Shalulile as Gift Motupa earned his first start in the club’s colours since his arrival at the club the start of the season.

Co-coach Manqoba Mngqithi has since explained the absence of the 27-year-old Namibian international and confirmed that he will miss a second DStv Premiership clash, this time against Golden Arrows on Wednesday, 28 April (17:00).

“Shalulile has a Grade-1 strain in his ankle. He should be ready possibly after the Golden Arrows match,” Mngqithi told the media.

Peter Shalulile has scored 16 goals and eight assists in 31 matches across all competitions for the Brazilians this season.

Sunday was just the fourth match he has missed all season.

Despite the defeat, Masandawana are still cruising to a fourth consecutive PSL title – and 11th overall – in what is the 25th PSL season since inception in 1996/97.

Mamelodi Sundowns have 47 points from 22 matches and hold a three-point lead over second-placed AmaZulu while still having two games in hand.

The best AmaZulu can do – assuming they win their remaining six matches – is 62 points.

Mamelodi Sundowns would therefore just need 16 points from their final eight matches (five wins and a draw) to clinch title honours.
