Mamelodi Sundowns chairman opens up on Rhulani’s promotion

Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopi Motsepe has opened up on the technical team changes that saw Rhulani Mokwena ascend to the position of head coach.

Mokwena had been co-coaching alongside Manqoba Mngqithi but the changes were made after Sundowns’ 3-0 loss to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8.

Mngqithi was demoted to the position of ‘Senior Coach’ at Sundowns while Steve Komphela was promoted to be the club’s first team coach.

At the time, Sundowns said the changes were made simply because of the team’s unsatisfactory performances under the leadership of the duo.

Now, Motsepe, in an interview with SABC Sport, said the changes were made because the Sundowns management needed more clarity in terms of communication on the bench.

Sundowns have, so far, looked rampant since Mokwena’s promotion as head coach as they have won all seven their games without conceding while scoring a whopping 22 goals.

“The reason why the changes were made was because we needed a little more clarity in terms of the messaging going across the technical structures,” said Motsepe.

“So, what we’re seeing now is a result of all our coaches, being able to communicate more clearly, the structures, the flow of information is going at an easier rate.

“And I think that’s why we are seeing the club where it is now,” added Motsepe.
