Mamelodi Sundowns latest: Rhulani Mokwena breaks rare record

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rhulani Mokwena has broken a rare record with his team’s 2-0 win over Swallows FC on Tuesday night.

The Brazilians had to work hard to beat a very resilient Swallows team that is currently coached by Ernst Middendorp.

Two second half goals by Neo Maema and Themba Zwane were enough to take Sundowns to 34 points after 14 league games.

And that’s seven points ahead of second-placed SuperSport United who beat Cape Town City 1-0, thanks to Bradley Grobler’s solitary strike.

Now, the win saw Mokwena match a record which lasted for 12 years, and not even Pitso Mosimane was able to match or break it.

In steering Sundowns to victory against Swallows, Mokwena became only the second coach to win his first four league games in charge of the club.

He matched a record set by former Sundowns coach Antonio Lopez, who won his first four league games in charge in September 2010, according to OptaJabu.

Mokwena was promoted to the position of head coach in October 2022 following Sundowns’ heavy defeat to Orlando Pirates in the MTN8 semi-finals.

Since taking charge, Sundowns have looked rampant and unstoppable in the league, leading to many believing that they will successfully defend their league title.
