Mamelodi Sundowns fans probably see it every week but it’s different when coach Manqoba Mngqithi confirms it in his own words. Peter Shalulile is a striker with true defensive ability.

Besides putting the ball in the back of the net, there is another equally important reason why Shalulile’s name is the first on Sundowns’ line-ups.

Every coach in the world, at any level, will tell you that the modern striker needs to press high-up. In other words, there have to double function as defenders.

“We have worked very hard in that space and I must thank my fellow coaches and the players themselves to change the mentality into a counter is very seriously strong counter-attacking to counter-pressing team,” Manqoba said via The Ultimate Sports Show as quoted by iDiski Times.

“The team that have high press when needs to be, and there is a very big improvement in that space. And that has helped us a lot because the reliance is not only on the goalkeepers and defenders.

“Peter [Shalulile] probably is one of our best defenders from the top because he makes it very difficult for the opponent to easily see and find clear passes. He makes it very difficult for them, he is on the first line of defence.”

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS OFFICIALS TO BE EXPOSED BY PITSO MOSIMANE

In other reports, Pitso Mosimane believes we will be left astounded by the contents of his upcoming book, this is after he was again attacked at FNB Stadium last weekend.

As The South African reported last weekend, Al Ahly’s bus was blocked by Sundowns supporters in an attempt to intimidate the former Kabo Yellow coach.

The event was a repeat of last season’s scenes when the coach visited the DStv Premiership champions with his Egyptian club.

As we’ve been made to understand, Pitso Mosimane’s departure from Sundowns was forced by a nasty fallout with management at the club. Read the full story here.
