Sundowns – Rhulani Mokwena demands more from his team

This is typical of the best coaches in the world. Rhulani Mokwena is still not fully satisfied with his high-flying Mamelodi Sundowns.

Mamelodi Sundowns seem to be walking on water since Rhulani Mokwena took over in September 2021, but he is demanding some improvement.

MAMELODI SUNDOWNS FLY UNDER RHULANI MOKWENA

Despite six straight wins which have included 19 goals and zero goals conceded in the league and the Carling Black Label Cup under Rhulani Mokwena – the 35-year-old coach feels the team can do better.

“We have to keep on improving. We are not close to the team that we want to have…,” Mokwena said via the Sowetan.

“After [Orlando] Pirates victory, Trott Moloto [Sundowns official] said ‘you are good, but the challenge is can you get better?’ That was experience talking and the challenge now for us is whether we can get better and better.

“That was great advice given to the players and that’s the focus – to get better and better. We have to.”

REACTION TO ERNST MIDDENDORP

Following the 2-0 win over Swallows FC on Tuesday night, the Birds coach Ernst Middendorp declared the title chase is over – but Mokwena has a different view.

“I have great respect for coach Ernst and his opinions, but it is too early to say the league is wrapped up because there is still a long way to go. No league title has ever been won in January, there are still so many games to go,” Mokwena added.

“I must commend the players because we changed the structure a little bit because of the block at half time by taking Themba Zwane and Neo Maema to different positions and it was difficult for them to readjust to that because we haven’t done that before.

“Sometimes these things work and other times they don’t and I think it did work for us this time as we won the game and received huge compliments from the players,” the Sundowns tactician concluded.
