Mamelodi Sundowns the new Cup Kings? 10 finals, 8 trophies in 10 years!
Sundowns are undoubtedly the new South African ‘Cup Kings’ following their 2-1 win over Marumo Gallants in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday.

Mamelodi Sundowns are undoubtedly the new South African ‘Cup Kings’ following their 2-1 win over Marumo Gallants in the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday.

The Brazilians needed a Thapelo Morena goal in the 120th minute to lift the trophy after the game had ended 1-1 after 90 minutes.
This is Sundowns’ eighth trophy in the last decade – 2012 and 2022 – and they have certainly made a name for themselves as the best SA team when it comes to Cup competitions.

The title ‘Cup Kings’ of South African football was previously given to Kaizer Chiefs for their dominance when it comes to Cup finals.
The eight trophies don’t include the seven league titles Sundowns won during that 10-year period – and if included, the number of trophies is a whopping 15 in the past decade.

It could have been even better had Sundowns won the 2012 Telkom Knockout Cup final and the 2016 MTN8 final which they lost 3-0 to Bidvest Wits.
