Zimbabwean captain, Knowledge Musona has opted to remain in Belgium, despite reported interest from South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns.

The former Kaizer Chiefs striker has made the switch from Anderlecht, where he struggled for game time, to fellow Pro League outfit AS Eupen, joining on a loan basis.

Sundowns forced to look elsewhere for striker

He was said to be a prime target for the Tshwane giants, who have seen their stocks in the striking department deplete sharply in recent weeks.

Sundowns lost two strikers within days of each other, when Emiliano Tade – who has since returned to Auckland City in New Zealand – cut ties with the club .

The other player to leave was Tokelo Rantie, who went AWOL before his contract was terminated.

They have been further struck by injuries to Mauricio Affonso and Jose Ali Meza, who were sidelined in their last two games, where they picked up a single point – in a draw against Bidvest Wits.

Coach Pitso Mosimane had hinted at possibly bringing Musona on board, as he made no bones about his desire to add to his strike force.

“He (Musona) is the kind of player that I would take because he scores a lot of goals‚ huh,” Mosimane said earlier in the month.

“He’s a fighter, and he’s a Khama Billiat‚ he’s strong, and his attitude is right. He’s a good player. “So if we can get him‚ yes. Why not‚ I would like to have him.”

Musona opts for Belgium

However, the player has opted to extend his stay in Belgium, where he arrived in 2015, turning out for Sundowns midfielder, Andile Jali’s former club KV Oostende, before joining Anderlecht.

During his spell with the former, Musona has also spent a period out on loan at Lokeren.

Musona had been on camp with his new side, where he says he learned the ropes.

“I got to know the club and the team in the training camp in Doha and this week during the training in Eupen and I got a very good impression. I feel good here and hope to have some time in Eupen and to be able to support my teammates. The friendly against Ajax Amsterdam and PSV Eindhoven was a good start. I am a striker who can be used in many ways. Both in the middle and on both sides. I play where the coach uses me, maybe against Charleroi, because I’m fit, ” he said, according to the Eupen website.
