Mamelodi Sundowns latest: Zungu’s new jersey number revealed

Mamelodi Sundowns returnee Bongani Zungu has a new jersey number, and it used to belong to a club legend who enjoyed huge success at Chloorkop.

In an exclusive interview with the Sundowns media team, Zungu revealed that a decision was taken that he wears the No.8 jersey this time around.

The No.8 jersey previously belonged to legendary midfielder and captain Hlompho Kekana who recently retired from football after having parted ways with Sundowns in 2021.

And Zungu admitted in the interview that the No.8 jersey carries so much weight simply because of what Kekana achieved during his time with Sundowns.

Prior to his departure to Vitoria de Guimaraes in 2016, Zungu used to wear the No.34 jersey but he now returns to take over Kekana’s No.8 jersey.

“We decided that No.8 would be good for me,” said Zungu.

“The guy who wore the jersey here is a legend. I played with him, he was my midfield partner here… Hlompho Kekana.”

“I’m sure he would be happy to know that we decided that jersey No.8 would be [good for me]. It’s a heavy jersey of a guy that achieved a lot with the club,” he continued.

“And since I come back as a man, as a mature player, and experienced player, I think I will try my best not to drop the level of the jersey, just to keep it as top as it is,” concluded Zungu.
