Mamelodi Sundowns could be ready to pay the big bucks to see one of their ex-superstars back at the club.

Sundowns sold striker Cassius Mailula Toronto FC last season with great hopes his career would kick on in the MLS.

This came on the back of a brilliant breakthrough season at Sundowns. Mailula profited of an injury spell for top striker Peter Shalulile. The youngster would go on to establish himself in the starting line up He ended the season scoring 15 goals in 31 games, in all competitions. This type of form even attracted the eye of Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos with the player making his international debut in 2023.

Sundowns want a South African striker

That was not all that Mailula attracted, however, as rumours of European interest took off. In the end, he would leave Sundowns for the MLS, with the club striking a deal with Toronto. Unfortunately for the player though, he has not been able to live up to expectations. That, however, is not his fault, as he has hardly got a look in. In fact, whenever he has been given an opportunity, he has made an impression.

Mailula recently made his senior debut and scored his first goal for Toronto. Funny enough, he was immediately loaned out to their reserves. So far, he has three goal contributions in the seven games for the senior side. His lack of game time in the States, has seen him lose his place in the Bafana Bafana set up.

Last week, this publication reported that his former side Sundowns want to re-sign Mailula. Now according to Soccer-Laduma, a loan move is being discussed.

Mailula loan now possible?

“The latest news around regarding Mailula is that he could be available to Sundowns on a loan deal, which in part will be funded by Toronto. Our sources have indicated that the move could be mutually beneficial for both Sundowns and Mailula as the Brazilians are able to plug their striking gap, while the player could get regular game time in familiar surroundings. The finer details for the move are currently being discussed, though well placed sources have indicated that he could be back in Yellow and Blue at the start of 2024/25 campaign.” Wrote the publication.

Would this be the right move for both Sundowns and Mailula?
