Mamelodi Sundowns set to beat Kaizer Chiefs to star midfielder’s signature

Mamelodi Sundowns are set to pull out all the stops to sign a top South African star midfielder before the end of January.

According to Sunday World, the Brazilians are working around the clock to sign Teboho Mokoena from SuperSport United.

This despite SuperSport United making it clear that Mokoena will ONLY be allowed to join a club of his choice at the end of the season.

The fact that Bangaly Soumahoro was already training with Matsatsantsa before the mid-season break is indication enough that Mokoena could move to Sundowns sooner.

It was an attempt on the side of Sundowns to sweeten the potential deal, and Mokoena could well be on his way out at SuperSport United.

However, while a swap deal could be what both teams need, Mokoena won’t come cheap and Sundowns should be ready to part ways with millions of Rands.

Kaizer Chiefs were, at one stage, reported to be very interested in Mokoena but SuperSport United’s asking price was too high for them.

Sundowns, on the other hand, have never had a problem of spending big on high-profile players both locally and abroad.

And with that in mind, Chiefs may well consider themselves out of the race for the services of the Bethlehem-born star.

WHY MAMELODI SUNDOWNS NEED MOKOENA NOW

The Brazilians have a number of competitions to play in the second half of the 2021-22 season, including the CAF Champions League.

The Sundowns technical team has always emphasised the importance of winning the continental trophy again.

And for them to achieve that this season, they need all the best players available to compete with the best on the African continent.

Surprise Ralani has already joined them from Cape Town City at the age of 34, and that alone says Sundowns signed him to help them in the CAF Champions League.
