But even if they don’t achieve that feat, there are several other records the Tshwane giants could break before the 2023/2024 DStv Premiership season wraps up.

Masandawana beat Stellenbosch FC 1-0 last Saturday to inch closer to an unprecedented unbeaten campaign.

The win took them to 72 log points, breaking their own record (71) for points scored in a single 16-team season.

In the process, they also broke the PSL record for unbeaten away games (25), which now stands at 26.

With the league title safely wrapped up for seventh consecutive season, with just two games remaining, one would forgive coach Rulani Mokwena for resting some players and giving other fringe players minutes.

Mamelodi Sundowns will be in action on Tuesday, 21 May when they travel to the Mbombela Stadium to face TS Galaxy.

Kick-off is scheduled for 19:30.

But, according to the Opta Jabu website, the following NINE records have either already been broken – or could be shattered – by Mamelodi Sundowns to make 2023/24 a truly unique season.

1. Most wins (22 – Sundowns on 22)

Another less-talked-about target, but the foundation of a record-breaking season is the number of wins. 22 wins has been achieved only once before in the 30-game PSL era – and that was by Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2015/16 season. One more win will break that mark.

2. Most league doubles in a season (8 – Sundowns on 8)

Mamelodi Sundowns tied the record for most league doubles in a season with their win over Stellenbosch FC on Saturday (having beaten Stellies 3-1 earlier in the season. They will have a chance to break that record with victory over TS Galaxy on Tuesday, 21 May having won the earlier encounter 3-0. Only Manning Rangers (1996/97) and Mamelodi Sundowns (2015/16) have completed as many doubles in the same PSL campaign.

3. Fewest goals conceded (11 – Sundowns on 9)

For 20 years, the paragon of defensive solidity has been the 2003/04 Kaizer Chiefs side that conceded 11 goals in an entire season. That team conceded more goals in their final six games (6) than they did in the first 24 (5). Mamelodi Sundowns have a two-goal window to equal that record, and one-goal to set a new one.

4. Clean sheets (21 – Sundowns on 20)

In the same vein, the clean sheet record is well within reach. The same 11-goal conceding Kaizer Chiefs side kept a remarkable 21 clean sheets, a total Mamelodi Sundowns can match with one more, and surpass if they don’t concede at TS Galaxy and home to Cape Town City FC.

5. Goals scored (56 – Sundowns on 51)

Mamelodi Sundowns need five goals in their final two games to equal their own record of goals scored in a season (2021/22) – and six to set a new mark. Don’t bet against them doing so!

6. Goal difference (+39 – Sundowns on +42)

The saying goes ‘goals win matches, defences win titles.’ But we can add a third line – both bring you a massive goal difference. Ok, that doesn’t rhyme but you get the point. Mamelodi Sundowns are well on track to breaking this record.

7. Gap between 1st and 2nd (16 – Sundowns on 22)

This is one gap that can highlight how far teams are from challenging Mamelodi Sundowns next season. In the last two campaigns, Masandawana have ended the season 16 points better off than the team in second. It’s guaranteed to be 19 this season, but the last week will tell how far that stretches.

8. Gap between 1st and last (46 – Downs on 52)

Look away Cape Town Spurs fans. This gap is guaranteed to be 49 points this season and the last week will tell how far that stretches.

9. Invincibility (never done before)

This one is self-explanatory. Avoid defeat in their final two matches and Mamelodi Sundowns will become the first PSL team to play a season without defeat. games. Only fourth-placed TS Galaxy and seventh-ranked Cape Town City can stop that from happening …
