EXCL: Mamelodi Sundowns coach shortlisted for SuperSport United job

SuperSport United have shortlisted a Mamelodi Sundowns mentor for the vacant coaching position at the club, The South African can exclusively reveal.

According to a source privy to the situation, Matsatsantsa are trying to lure to Rhulani Mokwena from neighbours Sundowns ahead of next season.

SuperSport United have not had a permanent head coach since parting ways with Kaitano Tembo in April following a series of poor results.

Andre Arendse was subsequently handed the SuperSport United coaching job on an interim basis for the remainder of the season.

Now, SuperSport United have stepped up their search for a new coach, and this comes after being linked with a number of coaches, including Gavin Hunt and Fadlu Davids.

They are now keen on Mokwena whom they tried to lure a few years ago but failed as the 35-year-old remained committed to Sundowns.

Mokwena hasn’t been scared of taking coaching risks in the past, and while he is settled at Sundowns, a move to SuperSport United cannot be ruled out completely.

“Rhulani has made the shortlist. The management likes him and the direction is that the club needs a young coach with fresh ideas,” said the source.

“SuperSport know it won’t be easy to convince Rhulani to come out of his comfort zone at Sundowns, and the club might not be willing to release him but the management is confident he could be the right man for the job,” added the source.

The other two candidates also on SuperSport United’s shortlist are Arendse and former Pirates co-coach Davids, The South African website can report.
