Hlompho Kekana’s long-range goal ambitions were planted while he was a youngster in Zabadiela, Limpopo – while he watching players on television.

MAMELODI SUNDOWN LEGEND HLOMPHO KEKANA NAMES HIS LONG-RANGE SHOT INSPIRATIONS

We all surely have a favourite or two from the veteran midfielder’s archives. The flying bullets against Orlando Pirates? His cracker in Cameroon? The electric shot against Cape Town City at Lucas Moripe? There’s plenty more to choose from.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star took some time to chat about his goals via the MTN FC’s podcast.

“When I was young the only thing I was fascinated about was to see how my childhood heroes used to strike the ball,” Hlompho Kekana said.

“[Eric] Tinkler used to strike the ball. Dumisa Ngobe used to strike the ball. Paul Scholes because I am a Man United fan. Paul Scholes used to strike the ball very well!” he repeated in a raised tone.

“I used to get so fascinated over how they did that. It looks easier, it looks so fascinating to score from far. I just wanted to do that.

“I got it right when I was very young. It was something that I liked doing. I used to be that kind of guy who would go for it.

“I used to get shouted at and I just smiled because deep down I knew I could do it. I did it so many times when I was still at school.

“At professional level, the stakes are high. So many times my instincts tell me to shoot but I end up passing the ball. I have to fight my instincts but I have done it. I have scored so many, beautiful ones, scary ones,” he added with a laugh.

FORMER SUNDOWNS PRESIDENT MOTSEPE CHANGED KEKANA’S

In related news, the 36-year-old midfielder, who is yet to find a new club since leaving Kabo Yellow in recent months, revealed how Patrice Motsepe left a great influence on his life.

The ex-Bafana Bafana star went on his Twitter to wish Motsepe a happy birthday – but it was more than just an ordinary wish.

“Happy birthday to the CAF president,” Kekana said.

“The man has influenced my life in so many ways and today we celebrate him,” added the former Black Leopards, Bloemfontein Celtic, and SuperSport United number eight.
