One of the bigger transfer sagas in recent years broke on Wednesday afternoon, with Kaizer Chiefs confirming that experienced midfielder George Maluleka will leave the club at the end of the ongoing season.

The 31-year-old had been locked in negotiations with the Naturena-based outfit before dropping a bombshell.

After refusing their latest offer, he revealed that he had signed a pre-contract with Mamelodi Sundowns.

The player has only three months remaining in his deal with Amakhosi and has been an important member of Ernst Middendorp’s squad, even donning the captain’s armband on occasion.

According to a statement issued out by the Soweto Giants, they had not been notified by the reigning league champions of their intention to enter into a deal with Maluleka, as per Fifa rules.

The latest developments have placed Chiefs in a complicated position, as they are facing a transfer ban resulting from the way they conducted business in acquiring the services of Andriamirado Andrianarimanana from Malagasy club Fosa Juniors.

A ninth-minute strike from Themba Zwane was all that was needed as the defending league champions took all three points on offer, bringing them four points away from the log-leading Chiefs.

Defender Motjeka Madisha was named man of the match after a stellar performance.

The Brazilians next take on Highlands Park in the Nedbank Cup over the weekend before hosting Orlando Pirates on Tuesday, 17 March.
