Kannemeyer reveals transfer fee years later

Former Glamour Boys Fullback David Kannemeyer has revealed the fee Kaizer Chiefs paid to Ajax Cape Town to secure his services back in the day.

“I was no big-name then, I was just me (laughs), just one of the hottest youngsters,” Kannemeyer told KickOff.

“I think my time was up at Ajax at the time, and I also did well with the national team Under – 23’s. So I just thought it was the right time to move on, and also had some struggles at the time at Ajax in terms of getting a bit more money you know.

“And Chiefs came in and they offered a bit more, and it was a big opportunity for me coming from Cape Town to sign for Chiefs at the time.

“I did meet the chairman (Kaizer Motaung) before in Cape Town before I went on to sign.

“Obviously when they spoke to Ajax everything was agreed upon, and ja it was a no-brainer for me to go. That time people would always say if you don’t play in Joburg you won’t make the national team, but I made the national team playing for Ajax.

“I’m not too sure what happened with the Turkey move, but I think it had to do with money. I think Chiefs paid Ajax around R700 000, I’m not too sure, if I remember correctly I think I had about six months left on my contract at Ajax.

“If it was today my transfer fee would have been millions, you never know the clubs today pay big monies.

“It’s just unbelievable what the clubs are paying for players today, and they should appreciate that and invest the money properly,” the former number three concluded.

Maart the key player

Former Sekhkhune United midfielder Yusuf Maart is set to be a key player for Arthur Zwane’s reinforced Kaizer Chiefs side.

Maart impressed during the 2021/22 season earning an international debut and attracting interest from Kaizer Chiefs.

“With the evolution of the game if you look at his qualities as a footballer, he covers a lot of ground and distance on the pitch because of his high anaerobic capacity,” Senong told Soccer Laduma.

“Yusuf takes a lot of shots from outside the box, he can make a lot of forward passes, over the top, so he helps the team to defend very well because he works very hard in the defensive and attacking phase.

“So I don’t see Yusuf failing at Chiefs and I’m hoping he adapts and shine as soon as possible. He is very committed as he gives 110 percent at training and in matches, also he does a lot of individual analytical work, and gets clips of himself after matches and training so that he can always analyse himself critically and try to improve some areas and aspects of his game where he lacks.

“So by Maart being an adapter, I don’t see him struggling to adjust to playing within the Kaizer Chiefs group and also play for a big club of Chiefs’ calibre because of his mentality, he is a professional, works very hard and he is an international midfielder, he comes from Bafana Bafana,” concluded Senong.
