Former Orlando Pirates defender Siyabonga Sangweni credits the current good health of KZN football to a change in mindset from club owners.

Sangweni is pleased to see KZN clubs competing with South Africa’s top clubs.

KZN football is healthier than ever

There are now four top-flight clubs who call Kwazulu-Natal home and their ambitions are not limited to staying in the PSL.

“The current state of KwaZulu-Natal teams, it is something we always prayed for. It is inspiring and shows that club bosses are now moving to a direction of wanting more than remaining in the top league,” Sangweni told Soccer Laduma.

“We have seen more KZN players in big teams. We’ve been developing them and I think now it is about making sure the current generation doesn’t stress about moving to Gauteng to play in the CAF Champions League or getting noticed by Bafana Bafana.”

Sangweni feels that Maritzburg United are lagging behind their rivals from Durban when it comes to giving youngsters from KZN opportunities.

“The coaches we have are capable to deliver too, AmaZulu FC, Royal AM and Golden Arrows are doing well in my opinion. I think we need a better Maritzburg United too, they need to change their structure, they need to give more youngsters from the province an opportunity.”

Newcomers Royal AM have made the best start to the season of the KZN clubs, absorbing the experience of Bloemfontein Celtic and challenging for continental football.

Amazulu meanwhile have reached the group stage of the Caf Champions League.
