Itumeleng Khune believes that Kaizer Chiefs fans will only need to wait one more season before trophies rain down at Naturena.

Speaking ahead of the Soweto Derby, the veteran goalkeeper was positive about the direction the club is taking.

‘We should be able to win everything on offer’ – Khune

“If you look at European clubs, they are patient with coaches and players because they know the team is building,” Khune told reports as reported by Timeslive.

“Yes, we haven’t been winning silverware but the squad we have now, compared to the previous squad, I think is ready to compete. If we can be given more time, come next season, we should be able to win everything on offer,” added Khune.

Kaizer Chiefs won the league title and Nedbank Cup ten seasons ago ahead before another double was secured in the 2014/15 season.

Khune reckons the Glamour Boys class of 2023/24 can do the same.

Ten years on, Chiefs can do it again

“In the 2012-2013 season we were sweeping everything because we had a new coach [Baxter] and most Bafana Bafana players who were playing at Chiefs, such as Tsepo Masilela, Bernard Parker, Siboniso ‘Pa’ Gaxa, Siphiwe Tshabalala, Reneilwe ‘Yeye’ Letsholonyane and myself.

“Now we have strong, young and aspiring players who want to win silverware. That is what we talk about every day at work — that we want to win trophies.

“We promise our supporters things will turn around at some point.”

Ahead of a much-anticipated Soweto Derby, Kaizer Chiefs are in woeful shape and Khune isn’t guaranteed to start.

They’ve won just one PSL match since the turn of the year, meaning that they’re quite literally in relegation form. In stark contrast, in-form Orlando Pirates have won five of their last six matches across all competitions and enter the derby in great shape.

On Saturday, 25 February the Soweto Derby will grab local attention when the match kicks off at 15:00.
