There is no doubt that Orlando Pirates were the big winners from this past transfer window, with the Buccaneers moving and shaking in the recruitment market as they snapped up three highly-regarded players.

Earlier this month, SABC Sport reported that Orlando Pirates were also considering bringing veteran striker Ndumiso Mabena back to the club.

The 35-year-old recently parted ways with Royal AM following their court battle over the player’s unpaid salaries, and his agent has said this month that there were three clubs potentially interested in securing his services.

According to online source Unplayable on Wednesday, Mabena has been training with Orlando Pirates as a free agent, and is “set to sign”.

In another update from SABC Sport, though, the player’s representative Machini Motloung has provided a key update.

“Upon receiving his clearance, we needed to look for opportunities for Ndumiso Mabena and we are currently doing that. Orlando Pirates has been one of the clubs that we had approached to give Ndumiso a chance, and indeed yes…he is training there.

“He is not on trial but maintaining his fitness and sharpness levels. As you would appreciate that he missed a lot of pre-season training. So, he is keeping in shape so that if an opportunity comes he is ready to play. At the moment there’s no conversation regarding keeping him at Pirates, all that is happening at the moment is to make sure that Ndumiso gains his fitness levels and we are grateful he was given that opportunity by Orlando Pirates. These types of practices, in any event, do happen.”

Mabena previously played for the Buccaneers from 2009 to 2014 before he left to join Platinum Stars. TS Galaxy have also been linked with interest in the forward.

At the start of the new season, Pirates are viewed by many as the only club looking likely to potentially challenge Mamelodi Sundowns for the title this season, and the Bucs certainly made some key power plays to further bolster their squad even further.

As the transfer deadline drew towards a close at midnight on Thursday, Pirates officially announced the signing of talented Ndabayithethwa Ndlondlo. The 27-year-old joins the Buccaneers on a three-year deal for an undisclosed fee from Marumo Gallants.

On Friday morning, Pirates confirmed the recruitment of Kermit Erasmus on a two-year deal. Romeo, as he is affectionately known, returns to the club having left to join French outfit Stade Rennais back in 2016.

The experienced forward joins the Buccaneers having recently been cleared by his former employer and becomes the sixth senior signing of the season.

It also shouldn’t be overlooked that in the statement related to Erasmus, Pirates also confirmed the signing of goalkeeper Sipho Chaine. The 25-year-old signs from Chippa United on a three-year deal.
