Keet says he’d never join Sundowns, even for R1 million

Bafana goalkeper, Darren Keet says he would never leave Bidvest Wits for another local club.

Bidvest Wits and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, Darren Keet says he would pass on an opportunity to earn R1 million a month if it came via a transfer to PSL champions, Mamelodi Sundowns.

After turning in what was perhaps his best performance in national colours, the 29-year-old was one of the heroes in Bafana’s triumph against Libya, which saw them qualify for the Afcon 2019 tournament in Egypt.

He has been linked with a move away from The Clever Boys, with reports suggesting he is seeking a return to Europe where he spent five years with Belgian top-tier outfit, KV Kortrijk before returning to his childhood club.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday, Keet was quizzed on whether he would consider a move to the Brazilians if a hefty wage was placed on the table.

“There’s no reason for me to leave and any money any other club can offer, Wits can pay me also,” he responded.

“So it’s not even about the money, it’s not about anything for me.

“We’ve got more chances of winning the league (at Wits) than at other teams, so there’s no reason for me to even bother or want to leave.

“Obviously there’s talk, and there’s always going to be an interest in players around South Africa, and it’s no different for me.”

Keet’s contract with Wits is drawing to a close, and the two parties are currently locked in negotiations for an extension.

He said he is not considering moving to another South African club.

“No, I’m not going to do things like that. I’m not looking to join any club in South Africa.

“If there’s no overseas club I will stay at Wits. Like I said, there’s no better place for me than right here.

“My family is happy, the club likes me, and I like the club.”

Keet graduated from Bidvest Wits’ junior side in 2008, joining the senior side as a teenager.

He made over 50 league appearances for the club before courting interest overseas and joining Kortrijk in 2011, where he was a regular starter until returning to Wits five years later.

The shot-stopper has earned eight Bafana caps since making his debut at a friendly against Zimbabwe at Orlando Stadium in September 2013.
