Kaizer Chiefs have some difficult decisions to make at the turn of 2023, with six players out of contract in June.

In January, if they haven’t yet extended, these players are free to talk to other clubs and sign pre-contract terms. Therefore, Amakhosi management must act fast to either tie these players down or get rid. Here’s how we see it all panning out.

Kaizer Chiefs: Six players that could leave for NOTHING in June

Our verdict on six out-of-contract Kaizer Chiefs stars

Itumeleng Khune – KEEP

The club captain has oodles of charisma and presence in the dressing room, and 35 isn’t even that old for a goalkeeper. Provided he agrees to a pay-cut, he should be retained.

Eric Mathoho – DUMP

“Dump” is a strong word for a guy who’s given the club such stellar service. Rather, it’s not expected that Chiefs will extend the 32-year-old’s current deal when it expires in less than eight months time. “Tower” has been a loyal servant and his contributions will be remembered fondly by fans.

Phathutshedzo Nange – DUMP

The 30-year-old central midfielder hasn’t had a look-in this season, with the likes of Yusuf Maart, Siyethemba Sithebe and Njabulo Blom all ahead of him in the pecking order. He will not be missed.

Njabulo Blom – KEEP

This is a tricky one. An ongoing transfer saga is brewing at Naturena, with the highly-coveted 22-year-old demanding improved wages and status within the club. Rightly so. If Chiefs can somehow persuade Blom that he can achieve his footballing goals with them, they have a player around which they can build for many years to come.

Khama Billiat – DUMP

Billiat has been a mere shadow of himself since a switch from Sundowns. Once upon a time this man was a lethal force, perhaps the best wide attacker in the country, but he’s severely short of confidence. It might be best for all parties if Khama Billiat moved on, because it would also significantly trim the Kaizer Chiefs wage bill.

WORLD CUP: Has any team ever lost their opening game and still won the trophy?

Sifiso Hlanti – KEEP

Left-back stalwart Hlanti has been a permanent fixture in the Amakhosi lineup this season. Chiefs could do a lot worse than tying the ex-AmaZulu, Wits and Swallows man down to a new contract because he’s just such a reliable performer. This is a no-brainer.

Which of these players would you ditch and which would you keep? It’s decision time.
