Kaizer Motaung pays tribute to King Goodwill Zwelithini

Kaizer Chiefs chairperson Kaizer Motaung has paid tribute to King Goodwill Zwelithini, the King of the Zulu nation who died on Friday.

He died from a diabetes-related illness at the age of 72.

“It is sad to learn that the King is no more,” said Kaizer Motaung.

“I know King Zwelithini as a notable leader in the South African history. Personally, I have encountered him as a great and well-respected man who has contributed quite a lot to South Africa.

“I have many memories of the King both from a historic point of view and personal point of view. Just to point out a few interactions of note.

“I came into close contact with the King during my days as a football player. When Kaizer Chiefs played KwaZulu-Natal teams, we would occasionally be invited to visit and meet the King. He was a humble and jovial person, always full of smiles and welcoming.

“One of Kaizer Chiefs’ directors the late China Ngema was very close to the King. He kept in touch and direct interaction with the King and that made us close friends of the King.

“Recently Kaizer Junior through his foundation, the Kaizer Junior Foundation had made very close contact with the King. The foundation partnered with the King and Queen of the Zulu nation to bring Covid-19 relief packages to more than 600 families in KwaNongoma. Kaizer Junior continued to keep regular contact with the King.

“The King has made an indelible contribution to the nation and his spirit will remain with us for time in memorial.

“On behalf of my family and Kaizer Chiefs, I wish to express my deepest heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the Zulu nation at large.”

“May the soul of His Majesty Isilo Samabandla Onke, King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu, rest in peace!”, Kaizer Motaung concluded.
