Kaizer Chiefs vs PSL saga: Deadline set for appointment of arbitrator

Kaizer Chiefs and PSL have a deadline to meet in regard to the appointment of an arbitrator who will be in charge of their case.

Kaizer Chiefs and PSL have a deadline to meet in regard to the appointment of an arbitrator who will be in charge of their case.

According to TimesLIVE, Monday, 31 January 2022 is set aside as the final day for the two parties to agree on one arbitrator.

The publication reports that there are three names for both Chiefs and the league to choose from in the next few days.

In the event that Chiefs and PSL do not agree on any of the three arbitrators, the South African Football Association (SAFA) will appoint one.

Last week, PSL prosecutor advocate Zola Majavu confirmed the league’s decision to postpone the Chiefs matter pending the outcome of the SAFA arbitration with 25 February set as the date for the hearing.

WHY IS KAIZER CHIEFS AND PSL GOING TO SAFA ARBITRATION?

Kaizer Chiefs were charged by the league for their failure to honour two of their five December 2021 fixtures.

But before being charged, Amakhosi had made it clear that they would appeal the PSL’s decision to reject their request for the postponement of their December fixtures.

Chiefs had written to the PSL on the back of 31 positive cases of Covid-19 within their camp – the number rose to over 50 within two weeks.

The Soweto giants felt the lives of their employees came first – and they couldn’t risk playing against Cape Town City and Golden Arrows.

The matter is now in the hands of SAFA, and the league’s Disciplinary Committee will decide if they still want to pursue the matter come 25 February.
