The 2019/20 PSL season is on the horizon, and it was kicked off in grand style with Orlando Pirates brushing Kaizer Chiefs aside in the Carling Black Label Cup.

The Buccaneers maintained their dominance over their fierce Soweto rivals, denying them a victory for the 13th time on the trot.

Goals from Augustine Mulenga and Thembinkosi Lorch saw Milutin Sredojevic’s men run off with a 2-0 victory, handing Pirates a record fifth pre-season title at Chiefs’ expense.

For “Micho”, who is still seeking his first trophy with the club, the main success was keeping  determined outfit off the scoreboard.

“We succeeded in keeping a clean sheet against a team that threw everything at us and took a lot of risks going 2-0 down,” he said.

“The most important thing after five weeks of preparation is that we have won. This will be an injection of motivation for us. “We are far from having a right competitive shape. There is a lot of work to be done. We are a work in progress. But there is no better thing than beating Chiefs and getting that injection of confidence. We must critically look at the things we need to improve on.”

Despite crashing to their second successive defeat in their pre-season preparations, Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp managed to find a silver lining in the result.

“We have had a good pre-season,” Middendorp told SuperSport after the game.”We worked hard, we challenged the players around the clock over these four weeks. I think overall the cohesion is quite good. Much better than before. That showed on the performance side today. The players will learn from this and do better next time.”

The German tactician is confident that the week before their first fixture of the upcoming season will yield a bit of direction for the club.

“We definitely will try to find the core, from the goalkeeper to the centre-back position. We will work hard in the last days of pre-season to work on our setup before the Highlands Park game.”

Kaizer Chiefs kick off their campaign with a trip away to square off with Highlands Park on Sunday, 4 August.

For Orlando Pirates, their season begins with a home game against Bloemfontein Celtic at Orlando Stadium a day earlier.
