Kaizer Chiefs did NOT honour their Saturday’s league fixture against Cape Town City as announced that they wouldn’t be able to.

And that’s because a whopping 31 of their employees tested positive for Covid-19, and thus, forcing the club to temporarily close their facility in Naturena.

Amakhosi had requested the PSL to postpone the match but according to information circulated by Cape Town City Boss John Comitis, the league rejected the plea.

The league is yet to officially comment on the matter, and this despite holding an urgent executive meeting on Friday, 3 December.

Cape Town City arrived at the FNB Stadium on matchday, but they couldn’t acess the venue as the gates were locked.

So, who are the winners and losers of this whole saga?

WINNERS

CAPE TOWN CITY

Cape Town City might not be considered the winners by some in this instance but others would agree that they are the real winners.

They may have spent hours traveling to Johannesburg in preparation of this encounter – but the idea of being awarded maximum points was enough for them.

In addition, City did everything by the book; they honoured the fixture and did everything required of them as a professional football club.

CHIEFS EMPLOYEES THAT TESTED POSITIVE

The 31 employees that Chiefs confirmed to have tested positive are the biggest winners in this whole saga.

For instance, Chiefs could have opted to risk the health of the infected and those who had close contact with the 31 personnel.

However, they put their health first, and risked losing those three points and a possible fine from the league.

LOSERS

KAIZER CHIEFS

Kaizer Chiefs have lost big time in terms of their league title aspirations and ambitions – the three points they are likely to lose could be crucial at the end of the season.

Secondly, their brand has been impacted negatively, and the consequences of this saga could be seen in the long run.

After all, this is the biggest football club in the country with more than 16 million fans – and this saga could see a few of their fans distance themselves from the brand.

The league itself failed the country, and missed out on the chance to redeem itself by at least communicating to people they cater for – the fans.

As things stand, there is still no communication from the PSL to the fans – and there are more questions than answers.

Saturday was a sad day for football fans in the country as they waited in baited breath to know what the real story was.
