Kaizer Chiefs legend Tenashe Nengomasha believes the Amakhosi were spot-on in their decision to not extend the contract of his Zimbabwean compatriot Willard Katsande.

Katsande’s lengthy stay at Kaizer Chiefs came to an end last month after the club decided against extending the 35-year-old Zimbabwean midfielder’s contract at Naturena.

While many believed Katsande was unfairly treated by the Amakhosi, mainly due to the fact that fellow senior Glamour Boys in the form of Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Bernard Parker and Itumeleng Khune had their contacts extended, Nengomasha believes Katsande could no longer add value to the Amakhosi midfield and his time was up.

Willard Katsande deserved to be axed by Kaizer Chiefs

“People are making a mistake if they talk football that way that when one player gets a contract one must also get it. Let’s not take football with emotions. Let’s be honest, how many midfielders have Kaizer Chiefs signed?” Nengomasha told Sowetan.

“Football is business, you can’t have many players in one position, so I believe it was about time Willard Katsande left because the club acquired more midfielders. Remember, even Cardoso played at central defence under Gavin Hunt and I think he did well there, so in Willard’s case you also have to look at all those dimensions.

“In football, players come and go and that’s the nature of the game. There’s always a time to restructure and that’s what Kaizer Chiefs are doing, hence they let some players go including Willard Katsande, who has done well for the club in the past years.”
