Ramahlwe Mphahlele says that Kaizer Chiefs have to put all thoughts of where they are on the table out of their minds.

Mphahlele went so far as to claim total ignorance of the Glamour Boys current position in the DStv Premiership.

Kaizer Chiefs must take it game by game

Kaizer Chiefs moved up to second on the table on Sunday evening, but remain eight points adrift of table-topping Mamelodi Sundowns, who sport a game in hand.

The Bafana Bafana fullback feels players should not occupy their minds with thoughts of league tables.

“I don’t even look at the table,” Mphahlele said before the match. “I can’t even tell you what position we’re in now.

“We focus on one game at a time. I believe it’s good to collect points early in the season, but the league is a marathon that can be won on the last day.

“I’ve seen teams that are bottom of the log beating teams at the top, so we just have to focus on ourselves. We must stick to our game plan and treat them with respect.

“Also when teams play against us they tend to revive themselves and play well, so we can’t take any team for granted. The minute we start looking at teams and their positions that will be our downfall.”

No shame in Amazulu stalemate

Mphahlele dismissed the notion that Kaizer Chiefs ‘dropped points’ in their 1-1 draw at home to Amazulu.

“AmaZulu are one of the best teams in the league, so it’s an important point for us,” says Mphahlele.

Mphahlele’s return to the Kaizer Chiefs lineup has coincided with an upturn in performances.

The right-sided defender even laid on an assist for Khama Billiat in their resounding 3-1 win over Moroka Swallows on Sunday.
