Sithebe only joined Chiefs at the start of the current season when he penned a two-year deal with the club, following a controversial exit from AmaZulu.

Sithebe joined under controversy

The dreadlocked midfielder had initially signed a pre-contract with Chiefs in January 2022, in what had become one of the worst kept secrets of the window. In fact, some quarters even believed that the player would eventually join Amakhosi during that same window instead of waiting for the end of the previous campaign. However, it seemed like AmaZulu struggled to accept the fact that Sithebe was leaving behind their backs and resorted to punishing the player for what remained of his then contract.

Upon joining Chiefs, Sithebe quickly found favour in the newly formed club management led by Arthur Zwane, with the Bafana Bafana international often starting as the box to box midfielder in a midfield trio. His performances were indifferent, however, and soon he would find himself out of favour and eventually replaced in the starting line up by now former player Njabulo Blom, while Zwane also started introducing a number 10 to his midfield.

New lease on life at Chiefs?

At the start of this year, Sithebe was then linked with a shock exit from Chiefs, with widespread reports stating the club had lined up a loan move for one of their new recruits. But after the experiment of playing young midfielder Samkelo Zwane didn’t yield results, the 30-year-old came on in the second half of a 1-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns and steadied the Glamour Boys’ midfield.

Sithebe has not looked back from there and according to Soccer-Laduma, could have earned himself an extension at Chiefs.

He has taken his chance

“It’s true. He (Sithebe) struggled for game time at the start of the season and management was thinking of loaning him out in January but since Njabulo Blom left and Cole Alexander is injured, management have entrusted that central midfield position to him and it seems he has impressed the team so much, they want to keep him for another two years.” Said the source to the publication.

Sithebe’s initial deal was set to expire at the end of the 2023/2024 season but should news of this fresh deal be true, he could find himself at Chiefs at least until 2025.
